Pronunciation

NEL-sunListen

Nelson is an English patronymic surname that literally means 'son of Neil' — in the US it's sometimes traced instead to a Scandinavian surname meaning 'son of Nicholas.' You may see it glossed elsewhere as 'son of Nell' or 'champion,' but that's a mix-up: the underlying name is Neil, not the female nickname Nell, and 'champion' is really Neil's disputed meaning getting carried over onto Nelson. It's pronounced NEL-sun (IPA /ˈnɛlsən/).

Meaning & Origin of Nelson

Meaning: Son of Neil (in the US, sometimes an anglicized Scandinavian surname meaning 'son of Nicholas').

Origin: English (patronymic surname).

A common claim: Nelson is sometimes glossed as 'son of Nell' or simply 'champion' Actually: The underlying name is Neil (male), not Nell (a female nickname), so 'son of Nell' is a mix-up; 'champion' is Neil's disputed meaning carried over, not a direct sense of Nelson itself.
