BANKSListen

Banks (pronounced BANKS, /ˈbæŋks/) is an English name, originally a surname for someone who lived by a riverbank or hillside, now used as a given name for either a boy or a girl. It's tempting to read it as a nod to wealth or the financial 'bank,' but that's just a coincidence of spelling — the surname comes from the riverbank/hillside word, while the financial term traces back to the Italian banca, or bench/counter, two entirely separate origins. With its vintage feel, Banks carries more of a sense of place and lineage than of money.

Meaning & Origin of Banks

Meaning: One who lives by a riverbank or hillside.

Origin: English (transferred surname/place name).

A common claim: Often associated with wealth or the financial institution 'bank'. Actually: That association is coincidental — the surname 'bank' (hillside/riverbank) and the financial 'bank' (from Italian banca, 'bench/counter') are separate word origins that just happen to share a modern spelling.
