Sutherland

At a Glance: Name: Sutherland – Meaning: southern land – Origin: Old Norse (Scottish county/surname) – Pronunciation: SUHTH-er-luhnd

---

Sutherland comes from Old Norse and means "southern land" — it's also the name of a Scottish county and a surname. The "southern" part often gets read as describing where the county sits within Scotland, but that's not the case: Sutherland is actually in the far north of the Scottish mainland, named from the viewpoint of Norse settlers in Orkney and Shetland, who were looking at it from even further north.

Meaning & Origin of Sutherland

Meaning: Southern land.

Origin: Old Norse (Scottish county/surname).

A common claim: Cited as meaning 'southern land' or simply as 'from the Scottish county of Sutherland.' Actually: The 'southern' in the name is ironic: Sutherland sits in the far north of the Scottish mainland. It was named 'south land' from the viewpoint of Norse settlers in Orkney and Shetland, to its north — not by its position within Scotland.
