Spruce is the name of the evergreen tree, and it started life as a place word: it originally meant "of Prussia," the region the trees and goods were linked to, before it shifted to name the tree itself. It comes from Old French Pruce, meaning "Prussia," so the "Old English" label you may see attached to it isn't accurate. It's pronounced SPROOS.

Origin: Old French (from Pruce, "Prussia").

A common claim: Widely repeated as simply meaning "the spruce tree" (labeled Old English/French). Actually: The 'Old English' label sometimes used for this name is inaccurate — it actually traces to Old French Pruce ('Prussia'), with the tree sense coming later.
