Pronunciation

koh-LETListen

Collette is a French name, pronounced koh-LET, that developed as a medieval diminutive of Coll — itself a short form of Nicholas. You may come across the claim that it means 'victory' or 'victorious,' but that's not quite accurate: Collette traces directly back to Coll and Nicholas rather than to any standalone word for victory, though a faint echo of that sense lingers in Nicholas's own root.

Meaning & Origin of Collette

Meaning: Diminutive of Nicholas (via medieval short form Coll).

Origin: French.

A common claim: Widely claimed to mean 'victory' or 'victorious.' Actually: Imprecise — Collette is directly a medieval diminutive of Coll (short for Nicholas), not a standalone word for 'victory'; that sense only echoes faintly through the root name Nicholas.
