Pronunciation

EV-eh-linListen

Evelyn comes from the Norman French name Aveline, which traces back to an uncertain Germanic root — not from Eve, despite how often you'll see that claimed. Because of that mix-up, you'll often see it glossed as meaning 'desired,' but the truth is the original meaning is genuinely uncertain, with 'desired/wished for' and 'strength' both offered as possibilities. It's pronounced EV-eh-lin, and it falls into the classic category of names.

Meaning & Origin of Evelyn

Meaning: Uncertain; possibly 'desired/wished for' or possibly 'strength'.

Origin: Anglo-Norman/Old French (from Aveline, of Germanic origin).

A common claim: Evelyn is widely said to mean 'desired', often linked to Eve. Actually: Evelyn is not derived from Eve – that link is a folk reanalysis. It actually comes from the Norman French name Aveline, from an uncertain Germanic root, so 'desired' is a common but not fully certain gloss.
