Pronunciation

WIL-ahListen

Willa is a girl's name with a timeless, classic feel, pronounced WIL-ah. It carries the 'will, desire' sense, having been coined in 19th-century America directly from Will/William, a name of Germanic origin. You may have heard Willa said to mean 'resolute protector,' same as William — but that's William's own compound meaning (will + helmet), not Willa's; Willa is its own coinage from Will/William, so that phrase is really an inherited association rather than Willa's actual etymology.

Meaning & Origin of Willa

Meaning: Carries the 'will, desire' sense, from Will/William.

Origin: American (19th-century coinage from Will/William, ultimately Germanic).

A common claim: Often said to mean 'resolute protector,' the same as William. Actually: That's William's full compound meaning (will + helmet) — Willa is itself a 19th-century American coinage based on the name Will/William, not a direct translation of that compound, so 'resolute protector' is an inherited association rather than Willa's own etymology.
