At a Glance: Name: Brighton – Meaning: Beorthelm's farm or settlement (a Saxon personal name + 'tun', farmstead) — not literally 'bright town' – Origin: English (place name) – Gender: Neutral – Pronunciation: BRY-ton
Brighton is a neutral-gender English place name, pronounced BRY-ton. It's often said to mean 'bright town,' but that's not quite right — it actually comes from Beorthelm's farm, a Saxon personal name plus 'tun' (farmstead), and the 'bright' resemblance is just a coincidence. If you like a name with real historical roots rather than the story usually told about it, Brighton fits that.
Meaning & Origin of Brighton
Meaning: Beorthelm's farm or settlement (a saxon personal name + 'tun', farmstead) — not literally 'bright town'.
Origin: English (place name).
A common claim: Brighton is popularly said to mean 'bright town.' Actually: Despite the resemblance, Brighton doesn't mean 'bright town' – it's a clipped form of Brighthelmstone, from Old English 'Beorthelm's farm,' and the 'bright' connection is coincidental.
