DEEL-yahListen

Delia is a Greek name, pronounced DEEL-yah, with a classic, vintage feel that reaches back to ancient roots. Its documented meaning is 'of Delos,' an epithet used for the goddess Artemis to mark her birthplace on the island of Delos. You may come across a claim that Delia means 'heart of a lion' through a tie to Cordelia, but that reading isn't supported by the name's actual Greek origin.

Meaning & Origin of Delia

Meaning: An epithet of the goddess Artemis referring to her birth on the island of Delos ('of Delos').

Origin: Ancient Greek.

A common claim: Delia is sometimes claimed to mean 'heart of a lion,' via its use as a short form of Cordelia. Actually: Delia actually means 'of Delos,' an epithet of the goddess Artemis referring to her birth on that island — the 'lion-hearted' meaning belongs to Cordelia, not Delia.
