Francis is a Latin name from the Medieval period that simply meant "a Frenchman" or "a Frank" — someone from France. You may have heard it described as meaning "free one," but that's not accurate; that sense belongs to the related word "frank," not to Francis itself. It's a timeless, classic, vintage pick for boys, pronounced FRAN-sis (/ˈfrænsɪs/).
