Pronunciation

JOR-juhListen

Georgia (pronounced JOR-juh) is a classic name with Greek roots that mean farmer or earth-worker, giving it a grounded, nature-connected feel alongside its timeless appeal. You might have heard it's named after the country of Georgia, itself supposedly named for Saint George, but the country's name most likely comes from an entirely different, likely Persian root — so that popular story isn't quite right. What's left is a name with real staying power and an earthy meaning of its own.

Meaning & Origin of Georgia

Meaning: Farmer, earth-worker.

Origin: Greek.

A common claim: Georgia is often assumed to be named after the country of Georgia, which people in turn believe was named for Saint George. Actually: The country's name almost certainly comes from a separate, likely Persian root — it isn't actually derived from Saint George, so it shouldn't be conflated with the given name's Greek 'farmer' root.
