Pronunciation

Miles is pronounced MYLZ (/ˈmaɪlz/) and has a classic, timeless feel. Its exact origin is genuinely uncertain — most trace it back to the Old French name Milo, with possible Germanic or Slavic roots further back. You may come across the claim that it means 'soldier' from the Latin miles, but that's not accurate: Wiktionary describes Milo/Miles as 'of problematic origin,' and the soldier link is just a coincidence of spelling rather than a proven connection.
