At a Glance: Name: Moon – Meaning: the moon (Earth's satellite) – Origin: English / multiple (surname & word-name) – Gender: used for both boys and girls
Moon is a word-name straight from the English word for Earth's satellite, with an origin as both a surname and a nature word-name. You may have heard that 'Moon' comes from a Latin root meaning 'to measure' — that's not quite accurate: the 'to measure' root is real, but it's Proto-Indo-European (*meh1-), which is why 'moon' and 'month' are related words, not evidence of a Latin origin for the name. For parents wanting a short name that carries its meaning plainly, Moon does that without any digging required.
