Pronunciation

TRIS-tunListen

Tristan is a romantic, storybook boy's name with a bold streak, pronounced TRIS-tun. It comes from Celtic roots (Pictish/Brythonic, by way of Arthurian legend) and means "tumult" or "riot." You'll often hear that it means "sorrowful" because of the tragic medieval love story, but that's a folk etymology echoing Latin tristis; the name itself has nothing to do with sadness.

Meaning & Origin of Tristan

A common claim: Tristan means 'sorrowful' or 'sad,' fitting the tragic medieval romance. Actually: This is a folk etymology from the tragic love story (echoing Latin tristis, 'sad'); the name actually derives from Pictish/Brythonic Drystan/drest, meaning 'riot' or 'tumult,' unrelated to sadness.
