At a Glance: Name: Wright – Meaning: a maker or craftsman, from the archaic word for a builder of any kind – Origin: English/Scottish (occupational surname) – Gender: primarily used for boys
Wright is an English and Scottish surname that comes from an occupational word for a maker or craftsman — the same root behind terms like 'playwright' and 'wheelwright.' You might see it described specifically as meaning 'woodworker,' but that's narrower than the actual word: on its own, 'wright' just refers to a maker or craftsman of any kind. As a first name, it carries that straightforward, work-rooted history.
Meaning & Origin of Wright
Meaning: A maker or craftsman, from the archaic word for a builder of any kind.
Origin: English/Scottish (occupational surname).
A common claim: Often described specifically as 'shaper of wood' or 'woodworker' Actually: Too narrow — 'wright' on its own just means a general maker or craftsman (compare 'playwright,' 'wheelwright'); the wood association comes from specific compounds, not the base word.
