Pronunciation

KOHLListen

Cole is pronounced KOHL, and it comes from Middle English, where it meant coal-black or swarthy — a description of dark hair or complexion rather than anything abstract. You may see it explained elsewhere as meaning 'victorious people,' but that gloss only comes from Cole's occasional use as a short form of Nicholas and isn't its best-supported sense; the primary meaning is the coal-black one. It has both a clean, modern and a timeless, classic feel, fitting the broader classic era.

Meaning & Origin of Cole

Origin: English (Middle English).

A common claim: Cole is widely repeated on baby-name sites as meaning 'victorious people.' Actually: Cole most likely comes from a nickname for dark or coal-black features — meaning 'coal-black' or 'swarthy' — not 'victorious people.'
