DEENListen

Dean comes from an English surname, and its most solidly documented sense is simple and down-to-earth: someone who lived in a valley, or a dale. You might see it described elsewhere as meaning 'leader' or 'great man,' borrowed from the academic or church title, but that's a separate, minor theory rather than the name's real footing. It's short and plain-spoken, said DEEN, and has stayed part of American naming for well over a century.
