At a Glance: Name: Evangeline – Meaning: good news – Origin: Greek (literary coinage) – Gender: Girl – Pronunciation: ee-VAN-jeh-leen
Evangeline has a storybook, old-fashioned feel that's stayed classic rather than trendy. It's a Greek literary coinage meaning 'good news,' and despite how it looks on the page, it isn't related to 'angel' — that's just a spelling coincidence, since the name actually comes from the Greek euangelion, the same root as 'evangel.' It's said ee-VAN-jeh-leen.
Meaning & Origin of Evangeline
Meaning: Good news.
Origin: Greek (literary coinage).
A common claim: Often thought to mean 'angel,' because the name looks like it contains the word 'angel.' Actually: That's a spelling coincidence, not the etymology — Longfellow coined the name from Greek euangelion, 'good news' (the root of 'evangel/gospel'), not from 'angel.'
