Planning for a baby is so exciting, and setting up your nursery is essential for preparing for your little one. But it also feels overwhelming to think about all you need, and it’s easy to go a little overboard. If you want to keep it simple and start with the baby basics, I’ve got you covered.
I’ve created a minimalist baby registry, with the essentials you’ll need to make your postpartum a little easier. Of course, you’ll want more as your baby grows, but the baby necessities below are the items you’ll want for those early days and beyond!
01. Baby Lounger, Bouncer, or Bassinet
A plush lounger is perfect for an easy, safe spot for Baby. I love that this is small and lightweight, meaning you can move it around as needed.
A baby bouncer or bassinet is a good alternative to the lounger. Go for a bouncer if you want something that can rock your baby, or choose a bassinet if you want something safe for sleep.
02. Baby Crib
A baby crib is a no-brainer for a minimalist baby registry list. Choose something simple and sleek for a modern look or pick a detailed wooden crib for a vintage feel.
Either way, don’t forget a firm baby mattress to go with it!
03. Waterproof Mattress Cover
For easy clean-up, invest in a high-quality waterproof mattress cover.
04. Crib Sheets
Whether you choose sheets in floral print, solid pastel colors, or a silly animal pattern, these are a must! I recommend keeping at least three in rotation, but you can buy more if needed.
05. Swaddle Blankets/Sleep Sacks
I love adorable muslin blankets for a nursery, and these soft, breathable blankets are perfect for swaddling. Sleep sacks are also a great option and can be safer than blankets.
06. Changing Table
For late-night diaper changes during the newborn stage, a high-quality changing table will make all the difference. Don’t forget the changing pad if yours doesn’t come with one.
07. Changing Pad Covers
Your changing pad is bound to get a little dirty from time to time, so add some extra covers to your registry to ensure Baby has a clean space.
08. Diapers
This one almost goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway! Add diapers in different sizes to your list to have a good supply for the first few months.
09. Wipes
What are diapers without wipes? These are a must-have for diaper changes, and you’ll find yourself reaching for them more and more often as your baby grows!
10. Baby Monitor
For safety (and peace of mind), you’ll definitely want a baby monitor. This one is usually a big purchase, so I recommend shopping around for one that checks all your boxes (video and audio, night vision, multiple cameras, etc.)
11. Baby Hangers
Unless you invest in a large dresser for your nursery, you’ll need baby-sized hangers to help you store all those adorable onesies, pajamas, and more!
12. Pack N Play
A Pack N Play comes highly recommended from tons of experienced Mamas. It’s helpful for traveling or if you have more than one small child. Plus, there are plenty of Pack N Plays that come with a bassinet, changing table, and extra storage, making it something you’ll get plenty of use out of.
13. Baby Wearer
Newborns and young babies just want to be with their Mama, so using a baby wearer allows you to comfort your little one and keep them close by while you tackle to-do lists or care for older children.
14. Stroller
A stroller is a must for taking your baby on neighborhood walks, bringing them along on a shopping trip, and so much more. Some features to look for include a lightweight frame, an easy, one-hand fold, and ample storage.
15. Diaper Bag
While you can use a regular backpack for a baby bag, diaper bags are thoughtfully designed to hold all the essentials you could need throughout the day. There’s so much variety when it comes to looks and features, so you can easily find something that works for your lifestyle.
16. Car Seat
A car seat is another baby essential, and while it’s one of the higher-cost items, you can invest in a convertible model that lasts beyond the baby stage.
17. Nursing Pillow
A nursing pillow can be a lifesaver for frequent feedings. It’s designed to keep you and Baby comfy while nursing or bottle-feeding, so you can relax and enjoy the special moment.
18. Nursing Pillow Cover
One or two extra nursing pillow covers will ensure you have a fresh pillow without having to constantly wash laundry.
19. Breastfeeding Cover
This is another essential for breastfeeding Mamas. A light and breathable nursing cover will make breastfeeding in public more comfortable.
20. Baby Bottles
Bottles are great whether you’re breastfeeding, using formula, or both.
21. Breast Pump
A high-quality pump will help you stock up on breastmilk for your little one. Do research to find the best breast pump for you based on factors like comfort level, noise level, ease of cleaning, etc.

Soft and adorable baby towels should definitely be on your minimalist baby registry. I love cute, hooded towels, and they’re perfect for keeping your baby warm after a bath!

Add a small baby tub to your registry to ensure your little one has a comfortable, safe place for bathing.
27. Wash Cloths
Washcloths can help you scrub your baby during bath time, and they’re also great for keeping them warm and cozy in the tub!
28. Body Wash/Shampoo
A fragrance and tear-free baby wash and shampoo will keep your baby’s skin clean without irritation.
29. Baby Lotion
Lotion is perfect for after bathtime to nourish that perfectly soft baby skin! I definitely recommend a lotion that’s specifically formulated for babies.
30. Thermometer
When it comes to your baby’s health, you’ll definitely want to be prepared. A trusted baby thermometer is essential for monitoring a fever.
31. Diaper Cream
Diaper cream is another essential for your little one’s health. There are many great options, but I love this clean but effective formula from Honest Co.
32. Nasal Aspirator
A nasal aspirator is perfect for helping your little one unclog their nose.
33. Hairbrush/Comb
Take care of that precious, soft newborn hair with a baby hairbrush or comb. A soft, fine-tooth comb or brush can also help you manage cradle cap, if necessary.
34. Nail Clipper/Emery Boards
I remember being so nervous to cut my newborn’s nails for the first time, but it’s infinitely easier with a baby nail clipper and mini emery boards!
35. Infant Medicine
While we all hope our little ones stay healthy through their first few months, it’s best to keep medicine on hand, just in case! Gas drops, gripe water, and pain and fever medicine are some of the top ones to stock up on.
36. Outlet Covers
While most babies are a little older when they begin to crawl, you can give yourself peace of mind by having the outlets covered long before that point.
37. Pajamas
Whether you prefer adorable footie pajamas like these or two-piece sets, sleepwear is another baby registry essential.
38. Onesies
For daytime dressing, onesies are perfect! Add both long and short-sleeved onesies to your registry for a nice variety.
39. Baby Bottoms
Include pants or shorts on your list to keep your little one covered and comfy.
40. Socks
Socks will keep those teeny, little toes nice and warm, and they will also protect your baby’s feet!
41. Mittens
Mittens can be so important to protect your baby from scratching themselves, but some babies end up not needing them. While I do recommend putting these on your registry, I suggest adding only a small pack to start with, see if you use them, and then go from there.
42. Baby Rattle
A baby rattle is a classic first toy for a reason, and I love the rattle/teether combinations for a multi-purpose registry item.
43. Baby Books
I recommend adding both soft books and classic board books to your minimalist baby registry so you can start reading to your baby as soon as they’re born.
44. Contrast Cards
Contrast cards are one of the first toys you can use for your little one, and these are essential for cognitive development! Go for classic black-and-white cards or choose a modern, themed set.
45. Tummy Time Mat
Finally, I recommend adding a tummy time mat to your registry. Perfect for developing muscles and motor skills, a tummy time mat will be one of your baby’s first and most important play spaces.
